The Ashe County Health Council:
A Healthy Carolinians Task Force

Mission Statement
Committed to joining the hand of the community to address wellness and to involve people in the planning and education necessary to meet their needs.

 

Priority Areas/Objectives
  • Access to Health Care: Information and Referral System
  • Chronic Disease: Cancer, Diabetes, Heart Disease
  • Community Health: School Based Health Center, Emergency Medical Services
  • Environmental Health: Lead Poisoning
  • Health Promotion: Nutrition, Physical Fitness, Tobacco
  • Infant Mortality: Intense Home Visitation
  • Infectious Diseases: Immunization
  • Injury: Domestic and Child Abuse, Suicide
  • Mental Health: Increasing the Proportion of Adults who receive Treatment
  • Older Adult Health: End of Life Care
  • Oral Health: Preventative Dental Service for Children

 

Programs/Initiatives

  • Dental Clinic: Established a Dental Clinic for Children, in collaboration with the Ashe Partnership for Children; Permanent Dental Facility expanded at the Ashe Health Department for needy Children
  • School Based Health Center at Ashe Middle School
  • ASHE- A Safe Home for Everyone: Program to meet the needs of Domestic Abuse victims: Establishment of Domestic Abuse Shelter
  • Diabetes Management: Self-Management Program established; ongoing Diabetes Support Group; Promotion of Diabetes Resources conducted in collaboration with local Lion’s Clubs
  • Suicide Task Force: Promoted awareness of issues surrounding Depression with two "Sunshine Sunday" events; andoverall increase in Mental Health awareness noted
  • Walking Trail constructed in Foster-Tyson Park, Jefferson.

  • Recipient of the William G. Anlyan Community of Excellence Award, 1999
  • NOVA award, 2000
