| Mission:
To create a foundation for healthy living, improved health, and ultimately
enhance the quality of life for all Chatham County residents by increasing
community capacity and advocating for policies that support health.
Vision: The
vision of Healthy Chatham is collaborative community involvement
in creating and nurturing optimal health and well being in Chatham
County through increasing community capacity to collectively identify
and address community concerns. Furthermore, we envision:
- Residents
making healthy lifestyle choices;
- Families
supporting healthy living;
- Public policies
creating health environments; and
- Organizations
supporting community health.

- Obesity
(Physical Activity and Nutrition)
Reduce the proportion of Chatham County residents who are overweight
or obese through county-wide initiatives, faith-based activities,
and school-based program. Programs include pedometer distribution,
Chatham on the Move physical activity tracking program, Winner's
Circle nutrition program in schools and restaurants, LIGHT Way
program in African-American churches.
- Unintended
Injury
To reduce the mortality due to accidents for youth 19 and under,
particularly within the Hispanic community, through a variety
of activities coordinated by the Chatham County Safe Communities/Safe
KIDS coalition. Programs include child passenger safety seat checks
and distribution, bike safety and helmet distribution, and driver
improvement program.
- Contaminated
Water
To assure that subsurface onsite wastewater treatment systems
are installed and operated according to applicable state statutes
and regulations, to reduce and /or eliminate groundwater contamination.
To increase use of best practices in drilling of wells and assessment
of well water quality.
- Unsafe
sex/unintended pregnancy
To reduce incidence of unintended pregnancy among adolescents
and adult women. Activities are coordinated by the Chatham Coalition
for Adolescent Health. Activities include school-based educational
programs and a peer education program.

Family
Violence
To reduce number of children permanently taken away from their
parents and increase the number of victims of intimate partner
violence seeking and receiving services. Education programs
are held in a variety of venues with families, students and
various agencies to increase awareness and better identify and
handle abuse situations.

Tobacco
Control
To reduce habitual tobacco use of 7th and 8th grade students
within the county. Activities include tobacco-free schools policy,
youth leadership development program, and merchant education
program.

Substance
Abuse
To increase the % of students who report that parents have talked
to them about the dangers of drug use and to increase the %
of students who report that their parents disapprove of alcohol
use. The Substance Abuse Prevention Department in the Chatham
County Schools coordinates activities including conducting the
biennial Alcohol and Other Drug Survey and monitoring active
programs.

Indoor
Air Quality
To reduce the percent of children reporting wheezing or breathing
problems in county schools reporting highest prevalence. Activities
include educating and assisting school officials, teachers,
staff, at-risk students, parents and childcare providers on
asthma symptoms, preventive measures, triggers, and treatment.

Affordable
and Available Child Care
To increase the number of childcare programs that are nationally
accredited or have a four or five star license. Led by the Focus
on Child Care committee of the Partnership for Children, activities
include training opportunities for providers and monitoring
of status of availability of child care within the county.

Infant
Mortality
The Chatham County Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition
promotes maternal and infant health. It brings together medical
and support service professionals who work with pregnant women
and young children and provides training opportunities and a
collaborative forum to discuss trends in maternal and child
health issues.
