Mission Statement

Columbus County Healthy Carolinians is a community-based partnership that coordinates and facilitates the "process" of "connecting" county-wide health initiatives in an effort to "build the capacity" by pooling resources, eliminating duplication and ultimately creating an environment that supports "total health" and an improved "health status" for Columbus County.

Priority Areas/Objectives

Chronic Disease
Heart Disease and Stroke: Reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease by providing in-service training for health care providers, community education, community screenings and policy initiatives.

Overweight/Obesity: Raise awareness of the prevalence of obesity in the community, by promoting healthy eating and physical activity in children and their families through culturally relevant social marketing interventions that are designed to effect behavioral change.

Diabetes: Increase awareness of diabetes complications by promoting the ADA certified Diabetes Education program at Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Inc.

Health Promotion
Physical Activity and Nutrition: Increase healthy habits by establishing community-based fitness sites; integrate fitness and nutrition activities in after-school programs; providing community education on benefits of exercise and healthy eating; and establishing physical activity opportunities at churches, schools and community sites.

Community Health
Economic Opportunity: Facilitating "Discover Columbus" to help in eliminating income inequalities among different segments of the population and ensure that ALL communities have a viable and sustainable economy and individual members have the opportunity to participate fully in work and production.
