"We of the Halifax-Northampton Healthy Carolinians Task Force
are dedicated to improving the quality of life for our citizens
by addressing health and safety issues at the community level."
|
|
- Cancer: The reduction of cancer death rates through the
commitment of educating the community about cancer prevention,
early detection, and warning signs.
- Diabetes: The reduction of diabetes incidence rates through
the commitment to increasing the awareness of diabetes education
opportunities within our communities, increasing opportunities
for improvements in nutrition and physical activity to prevent
complications, and to delay or to prevent the onset of Type II
Diabetes.
- Cardiopulmonary: Dedicated to the prevention and control
of asthma, high blood pressure, and cholesterol, all while increasing
the knowledge of stroke prevention and the number of individuals
who are CPR certified as well.
- Physical Activity/Nutrition: Dedicated to partnering
with community members, such as area churches and worksites in
the bi-county area, at all levels for the purpose of identifying
needs, securing resources, and developing strategies to improve
the physical and nutritional health of the citizens that it serves.
- Tobacco: Committed to educating, advocating and promoting
a tobacco-free lifestyle and a tobacco free environment for youth
whether in homes, schools, restaurants, hangouts, or recreational
areas.
|
|
- Stayin' Alive
Longer!: Faith based initiative that increases
the knowledge of diabetes, as well as the importance of physical
activity and nutrition. The East Carolina Department of Recreation
and Leisure Studies have implemented this program into 6 churches
in the Halifax-Northampton bi-county area thus far. Our goal is
to have 10 faith-based communities and 200 congregational members
involved by 2006.
- Diabetes Peer Education Training: In June 2003, Healthy Carolinians
Task Force provided a diabetes peer education training to 21 participants.
Participants were provided carrying cases filled with diabetes
literature to share with the community. Pre and Post tests were
also given for evaluation. This training will be available again
during the summer of 2005.
|
 |
- Kate B. Reynolds: Received a $45,000 Kate B. Reynolds Grant
to develop diabetes education and screening in 10 churches and
develop physical activity and nutrition programs in the 10 faith
based communities as well.
- Duke Endowment: In December 2003 we were selected for a 3-year
Duke Endowment Health Grant of $116,230 for the purpose of funding
a full-time Community Outreach & Healthy Carolinians Coordinator
who will be employed by our local hospital, Halifax Regional Medical
Center.
