1. Project LIFT (Lifestyle, Initiative, Fitness and Tobacco)
was initiated through a Kate B. Reynolds Project SELF Improvement
grant to address the areas of physical activity, nutrition and
tobacco prevention.
2. FitTogether, an initiative of the Health and Wellness Trust
Fund commission is allowing the agency to address the growing
problem of youth overweight.
3. Partnership For Health manages a Heart Disease and Stroke
Prevention grant from the CDC for the Henderson County Department
of Public Health to work on secondary prevention for heart disease
and stroke.
4. A federal Healthy Community Access Program grant is allowing
the agency to collaborate with even more county agencies to develop
a system of coordinated care for the uninsured and underinsured
population.
5. Oklawaha Trail: helped fund a greenway trail in Jackson Park
that will eventually connect two county and city parks.
6. Tobacco Free For Life: a youth center tobacco prevention program
centered in the schools empowers youth through peer mentoring
to not use tobacco products.
7. Established a Stroke and Aphasia Support group through our
Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention program.
8. Partnered with Council on Aging Meals on Wheels program to
distribute blood pressure, cholesterol and heart attack and stroke
warning signs and symptoms brochures to 300 homebound seniors
in Henderson County.
9. 4th & 5th graders at several schools were challenged to
"Be Active" using the beactiveNC Red Bands as rewards.
The students get a small card with a list of 10 physical activities
to complete. For each activity completed and signed-off by a teacher
or parent, the child receives a bead to put on his/her shoelace
to recognize the accomplishment. Once they have completed at least
7 out of 10 activities they are rewarded with a beactive NC red
band.
