METH PROGRAMS: CHL 45 Member Action Team comprised of representatives from county agencies and community organizations held community meetings to discuss Jackson County's growing drug and violence problems. In October, 2004 a successful workshop entitled "Bio-Hazard Next door" was held educating the public on how to recognize Meth labs in neighborhoods and precautions one should take. New programs are in progress.

CHILDHOOD HEALTHY WEIGHT: CHL 40 member Action Team on Childhood Healthy Weight provided BMI results from Jackson County schools and sent reports to parents. The Action team meets monthly to explore existing programs and develop new initiatives to encourage physical activity and healthy eating. Results from the 2005 survey can be found in the April newsletter posted at http://communityhealthlink.net

ASTHMA: CHL joined the Canary Coalition in 2004, a Sylva-based non-profit that works to improve air quality in the region. In February 2005 the Canary Coalition acted to block loosening of state's emission control standards. Many in the region suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, such as asthma, pneumonia and emphysema. Asthma is reported to be the reason children frequently miss school. http://www.canarycoalition.org/

Note: A copy of the community assessment is available through Commuity Health Link for area organizations who wish to affect change for health improvement in Jackson County.  We encourage community members to call us about community needs in order for us to consider the development of an action team to work on any concerns.
