Community Health Council of Rutherford Inc.

Mission Statement
To enhance and promote the total health of all Rutherford County residents.

 

Priority Areas/Objectives
  • Cancer: (1) Reduce Late detection of prostate cancer through community education and screenings, (2) Reduce death due to breast cancer by increasing the number of women (age 50+) who have annual mammograms through community wide screenings, and provide basic education on women's health and early cancer detection screenings, and (3) Reduce oral cancer by providing education and screenings throughout the community.
  • Physical Activity and Nutrition: Introduce a physical education and nutrition curriculum (that meets DPI standards) in schools.
  • Tobacco Use Prevention: Reduce tobacco use among middle and high school students by establishing smoking and chewing awareness courses throughout the community (at churches, worksites, shopping centers, etc.)
  • Access to Health Care: (1) Provide a program to assist eligible seniors with the purchase of life sustaining medications, and (2) provide 7th graders access to medical providers.
  • Oral Health: Provide a community wide program to address dental health needs of pre-school children and older adults in nursing homes.

 

Programs/Initiatives
  • Coordinated 600 Seventh Grade Health Physicals and School Athletic Physicals for the Rutherford County Schools
  • Developed a Physical Fitness and Nutrition Program for Seventh Graders in Rutherford County, includes the purchase of materials and teacher training to further the program
  • Development of a Senior Based Indigent Pharmacy
  • Rails for Trails Project: Supported the efforts of Bechlter Mint and a 100 strong Committee to increase recreation and exercise, upon completion the 28 mile trail will be the longest in North Carolina
  • Development of a Community Based Cancer Education and Screening Program.
