Mission Statement

"Scotland County Healthy Carolinians is a countywide coalition dedicated to the mission of empowering the citizens through education and promotion of healthy lifestyles and safe communities".

Priority Areas/Objectives

Physical Activity: Promote healthy lifestyles and increased physical activity through education and exercise programs in the community, public schools, and at specific worksites.

Nutrition: Provide nutritional education to promote healthy eating habits in the school system through implementation of the Winners Circle Program.

Chronic Disease: Empower and educate the community on promoting healthy lifestyles and making positive changes to reduce factors that contribute to chronic disease.

Environmental Health: Partner with Health Department Division of Environmental Health to educate the community about measures and policies that ensure the safeness and quality of the air we breathe and water we drink; educate the community on self-protection measures that increase their safety from environmental hazards.

Adolescent Wellness: Partner with Scotland County Adolescent Wellness Council to educate teens on reducing risk-taking behavior (sexual activity, unplanned pregnancies) by providing activities, education, and promoting positive self-esteem.


Programs/Initiatives
  • Implemented Scotland County Great Ex-STEP-tations Walking Program to promote increased physical activity and better health through walking.
  • Developed diabetes health checklist to empower persons with diabetes to monitor their health and progress with their medical provider.
  • Implemented Weight Loss Support Program (WLSP), lunch and learns, to encourage weight loss activity by educating participants about healthy eating habits, nutrition, and physical activity.
Awards/Recognition

Received 4-year recertification from Governor's Task Force for Healthy Carolinians 2004 -2008.
