Federal Government
American Association for World Health (AAWH)
AAWH is the only private national organization in the U.S. dedicated to funneling a broad spectrum of critical national and international health information to Americans at the grassroots level by developing and distributing practical, easy-to-use health education and promotional materials to those community leaders who can most effectively reach our U.S. citizens at the local level.

Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP)
The Association for Healthcare Philanthropy is an international professional organization dedicated exclusively to developing the men and women who encourage charity in North America’s health care systems. AHP is the complete source for education, networking, information and research opportunities in health care philanthropy today.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people - at home and abroad, providing credible information to enhance health decisions, and promoting health through strong partnerships. CDC serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States.

Healthy People 2010
Healthy People 2010 is the prevention agenda for the Nation. It is a statement of national health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health and to establish national goals to reduce these threats.


National Institutes of Health (NIH)
The NIH is one of eight health agencies of the Public Health Services which, in turn, is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Comprised of 27 separate components, mainly Institutes and Centers, NIH has 75 buildings on more than 300 acres in Bethesda, MD. From a total of about $300 in 1887, the NIH budget has grown to more than $20.3 billion in 2001.

Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP)
The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office of Public Health and Science, Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, works to strengthen the disease prevention and health promotion priorities of the Department within the collaborative framework of the HHS agencies.

Public Health Practice Program Office
PHPPO strives to attain its vision through a focus on the public health system. We focus on four elements essential to an effective, vibrant and strong community public health presence: the public health workforce, organizational effectiveness, the scientific capacity of public health laboratories, and the systems that manage public health information and knowledge.

US Department of Health and Human Services
The Department of Health and Human Services is the United States government's principal agency for protecting the health ofall Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.

U.S. Public Health Service
On July 16, 1798, President John Adams signed a bill into law that created what we now know as the U.S. Public Health Service. This web site was designed to help people learn more about public health and about the PHS during its Bicentennial year.

NC Department of Health and Human Services

North Carolina Institute of Medicine
Chartered in 1983 by the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Institute of Medicine (NC•IOM) is an independent, nonprofit organization that serves as a non-political source of analysis and advice on issues of relevance to the health of North Carolina’s population. The Institute is a conveyor of person and organizations with health-related expertise, a provider of carefully conducted studies of complex and often controversial
health issues, and a source of advice regarding available options for problem solution.

The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD)
The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) is the largest organization of professionals supporting and assisting those involved in physical education, leisure, fitness, dance, health promotion, and education and all specialties related to achieving a healthy lifestyle.

Association of State and Territorial Directors of Health Promotion and Public Health Education (ASTDHPPHE)
The Association of State and Territorial Directors of Health Promotion and Public Health Education's mission is to promote the quality practice of health education and health promotion as core disciplines of public health practice and to advocate for quality health education/health promotion programs and strategies to address the nation's leading health problems.

National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc (NCHEC)

Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE)
SOPHE is an independent, international professional association made up of a diverse membership of health education professionals and students. The Society promotes healthy behaviors, healthy communities, and healthy environments through its membership, its network of local chapters, and its numerous partnerships with other organizations. With its primary focus on public health education, SOPHE provides leadership through a code of ethics, standard for professional preparation, research, and practice; professional development; and public outreach.

Office of Public Health and Science (OPHS)
The Office of Public Health and Science (OPHS) is under the direction of the Assistant Secretary for Health, who serves as the Senior Advisor on public health and science issues to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Office serves as the focal point for leadership and coordination across the Department in public health and science; provides direction to program offices within OPHS; and provides advice and
counsel on public health and science issues to the Secretary.
